What sets our innovation apart is the ability to provide the market with an environmentally friendly and sustainable product at an affordable price for consumers. This challenge has not been addressed by others globally, making it an international breakthrough. Currently, there are no direct alternatives to copper- and creosote-impregnated wood that prioritize low pricing, bulk production, sustainability, and quality. Other manufacturers of premium wood offer products at significantly higher production costs, which translates to higher final prices for customers.

Our patent-pending production process can easily be integrated into existing facilities at current manufacturers. We only use chemicals from non-fossil sources that allow bulk production at low costs. This makes it possible to replace both creosote and copper-impregnated materials without increasing the cost for the end customer. CIOL® is also certified against termites, withstands marine environments and direct soil contact. This increases the international potential for the solution, as termites are a major problem in large parts of the world.

Possible alternative to copper impregnation

CIOL® can be an alternative to copper impregnation of wood. The EU’s Green Deal will probably make such products illegal by 2030. Copper and biocides are widely used to protect wood against biological attacks and to increase the lifespan of wood. Copper pollution alone is a big and growing problem not only in Europe – due to the use of copper as an active biocide, but also due to leaching of biocides from the product where copper is not fixed or naturally breaks down. Potentially, a total of 5,400 tons of copper leaks into groundwater and soil every year in Europe. Almost 80% of today’s approved wood protection solutions are copper. A large part of the market would therefore have to be replaced by sustainable alternatives, such as CIOL®.

Positioned to effectively replace creosote

CIOL® might also replace creosote, which was banned in Norway from 2023, and will be phased out in the EU within 5-10 years (Reach regulations). Creosote contains substances such as carcinogenic, that are highly irritating to the skin. CIOL AS will be able to supply wood with similar durability to these premium products, but at a lower price. Given the EU’s Green Deal and Reach regulations, many producers of impregnated wood in Europe are now looking for sustainable alternatives for the future.

Is CIOL® the future for wooden posts in Venice?

The use of wood in soil contact and marine environments is a growing desire among end customers/consumers. CIOL AS has already been contacted by a company that supplies and replaces wooden posts in Venice. This is just an example of how CIOL® may be used.
